This notice is to inform parents that ALL Kindergarten students will be screened for possible
This notice is to inform parents that ALL Kindergarten students will be screened for possible speech/language concerns at each of the elementary schools during the month of November 2026. These screenings are done to identify students that may need further speech/language testing/evaluation and will be conducted by the school district’s speech and language pathologists.
All children will be screened in the areas of sound production, sentence construction, understanding, voice ability, and stuttering. If your child is in need of further testing, you will be contacted by one of the district speech/language pathologists. If you have any questions, concerns, or would like to opt out of the screening, please contact the speech-language pathologist at your son’s or daughter’s school. If you do not contact the speech language pathologist at your child’s elementary, this serves as consent to screen your child.
Why Screen for Speech and Language Development? Speech and language skills are used in every part of learning and communicating with other children in school and are a critical part of early literacy development. Early detection of potential delays can provide an opportunity for additional support in speech and language development.
What can I do to help my child’s language development? The American Speech Language Hearing Association recommends several ways that parents and caregivers can help children meet speech and language milestones, including:
Ask children to identify objects based on descriptive clues
Ask children to give you directions and follow them
Give children your full, undivided attention when they speak
Allow children to respond to you
Practice building vocabulary
Encourage children to ask questions if they don’t understand what a word means
Read stories with age-appropriate plots
Ask questions – Who? What? When? Where? Why? How?
Include children in planning and discussing activities
