Notice to Parents and Caregivers:

Health Advisory: June 13, 2019

To: Parents and caregivers at New Richmond Middle School and High School.

From: St. Croix County (SCC)- Public Health

Dear Parents and Caregivers:

A confirmed case of pertussis, also known as whooping cough, has been identified in the New Richmond High School. With a potential exposure to other students during May 17 th through June 7 th 2019, SCC-Public Health is recommending that parents monitor their children for the development of a cough that doesn’t produce phlegm.

Enclosed is a fact sheet on Pertussis. Key information is that pertussis is germ (bacteria) that is spread through droplets in the air by coughing, or sneezing. It lives in the lungs, and can be treated with an antibiotic. Anyone can get pertussis, but it can result in complications for infants, pregnant women in their third trimester and people with weakened immune system.

SCC-Public Health requests the following:

  • If your child has a cough please keep, your child home and not participate in activities and contact your healthcare provider for testing and or treatment recommendations.
  • If your child is tested and treated for possible pertussis, please keep them home until they are treated for 5 days and or have results of a negative pertussis test.

If you have any questions, please call SCC-Public Health at 715-246-8330.

Sincerely,

Kelli Engen, MPH, RN
