SPARK (Supportive Peers As Resources for Knowledge) is NRHS’s peer tutoring organization. It is a service organization committed to developing assets in youth by helping them reach their academic potential. SPARK tutors are 10-12 graders trained to work on academics with their peers and volunteer their time during the school year to do so before and after school, as well as during study halls. Tutors are available to help students with homework, explain classroom concepts, study for quizzes and tests, help develop organizational and time management skills and many other areas related to improving academic performance. Tutors are not teachers or ‘the boss’ of other students. They are a peer helper to provide support and assistance. Students and/or families interested in accessing a SPARK tutor can contact their School Counselor or student’s teachers to arrange this opportunity. Tutoring relationships are confidential in nature.

Student interested in becoming a peer tutor can apply to do so in the spring of each year and should see Mrs. Gretzlock to do so. Potential tutors must be asset builders who have a positive peer influence and want to help others enhance their achievement and motivation skills. Tutors must maintain a minimum grade point average of 2.75 and have a ‘B’ or better in the subject area they want to tutor in. They must also obtain teacher recommendations.
If you are interested in getting a tutor, talk with your counselor! We also have drop-in tutors available in the career center most hours of the school day to help students as needed.
